Shopping Frustration and WIW

I'm sort of bummed! I ordered 3 cute dresses from Talbots and a striped blazer and a poplin jacket and 4 short sleeves shirts that all arrived yesterday afternoon. I ripped the package open and tried everything on. Out of the entire shipment only two pieces pleased me. I kept two sleeveless tank shells and everything else is going back this weekend to the local store. I really wanted the dresses at least to work! Sorry for the tirade! Here is one of the two shells (one black and one royal blue). I wore the royal blue today.

WIW
royal blue sleeveless shell from Talbots
gray levis
white denim jacket
blue tribal print scarf
white watch
silver hoops
black wedge sandals

I hope this looks ok. I would normally wear the blue with the white jeans or even with the black capris but I hadn't worn these jeans in a few weeks and felt I ought get them back into rotation.

    Makes you look very slender! Nice...

    And this is why I hate ordering clothes. I have to try on so many things till I find what I like.

  • texstyle replied 11 years ago

    I know that feeling so well - it IS frustrating. But in a way I may find it easier than going personally into stores to shop. I tend to make choices more carefully online. But they don't always work. I wonder if it was the fit of the clothes or the style/color that you didn't like?

    The tank looks great on you Meredith and I like the colour combination in your outfit. I hear your pain about waiting eagerly for an order and then it not working out. This is why I'm kind of "meh" on online ordering these days. I'm really preferring going into a store now.

    @Jr,
    Thanks for liking the top! I normally love ordering online and usually have pretty decent luck. This particular time, not so much! I actually find it harder to focus and see things I like when I have to actually go into the store!

    @texstyle,
    I totally agree that even though it is frustrating when it doesn't work, it is WAY easier for me than going into stores which just leaves me feeling disoriented and antsy to leave. I think I make better choices when I order online since I have time to really think about it.

    @Shannon,
    Thanks! The top is pretty basic but I DO love the color! I shouldn't whine about frustration with online ordering when I know that as a Canadian you go through real trouble when ordering from the U.S. and have to return something! I do still like ordering online more than going into the stores.

    Nice tank! Should be great for layering. I'm sorry the other things didn't work out. You have much better luck ordering online than the average person. Chin up! :)

    @Claire,
    Thanks! You are absolutely right that normally I do have good luck ordering online! My chin is pointed skyward now. :)

    Nice versatile tank, so at least you scored there!

    Don't feel bad. I recently ordered a few things from Nordstrom online and they came right before NAS (the dress in the Catherine Zeta-Jones post, and Angie's pic of the purple Vince Camuto dress were two of them). Not only did only one item of the five actually work for me, but the shipping department must have been having a bad day because instead of an Equipment blouse, I received a Pleione knit top in an XS. I knew something was weird when I opened the box! LOL

    Meredith, you and these blue lately...! W.O.W.

    Such a bummer about the dresses and toppers though :-( This is why it's so infuriating when sites don't give the exact measurements of garments, just the size!

  • catgirl replied 11 years ago

    Well, bleh! I am more than familiar with that feeling of returning everything lately, but believe me, it's better than keeping the mediocre stuff and then kicking yourself later, which was my previous M.O. You have very discerning taste and that is a good thing. And you have a fab wardrobe already, witness your outfit today. :)

  • Meredith1953 replied 11 years ago

    @Janet,
    Now I don't feel so bad! They actually sent you the wrong item? Very odd.

    @MandidpaM,
    Yep, I have had a real yearning for blue lately! Talbots is kind of iffy with the sizing. Oh well, this is really the first order I've done where such a large number of items are going back.

    @AG,
    I am REALLY trying to keep only the things I really feel enthusiastic about. That is very nice of you to say I have discerning taste! Thanks for liking the outfit today. BTW - the swimsuit you posted looked awesome of you! I commented but I was way down at the end of the thread.

    Wow, that tank is magical on you!

    I feel your frustration about Talbots! I have ordered many pieces from them over the years and finally gave up because their sizing is so inconsistent!

  • JulieJohn replied 11 years ago

    Looks cute, very relaxing color palette.

  • sarah replied 11 years ago

    I empathize, Meredith. That happens to me so often. I guess that's what I get for saving the trouble of shopping in B&M stores. The tank looks like it will be a great piece.

  • Abie replied 11 years ago

    You look gorgeous Meridith! Love the blue with grey! I am really loving gray a lot more lately for myself and hope to add some more too. I might have to look for some jeans.

    Also - I have had that problem many times, but specifically with talbots. Its frustrating because they usually have great fabrics but I have problems with their shapes. Sometimes I can find things but some things are just cut very strangely from there. Sometimes its extra boxy, sometimes I feel like the shoulders are huge compared to the fit of the rest. I am not sure why I struggle so much with them. They have different fits for body type, but I find even if I pick the seemingly right fit, several pieces will just be off.

    I know the feeling. I must return AT LEAST 75% of the styles I order with a return rate much higher since I am starting to order in two sizes. I have a huge bag waiting at my door to return to Talbots. A dress that was otherwise nice puckered down the stitching in front. The print made it a little difficult to discern, and the price was good after three markdowns, but I know it would forever bug me.

    At bricks'n'mortar stores, I'm sure I try on at least four to nine items for every one I actually buy, and then I still sometimes end up returning the thing because it doesn't *go* with whatever things I had envisioned it would due to color, proportion, texture, etc.

    I don't think there is any *perfect* answer. I am usually pressed for time when I visit a store, and some things are only available online, at least for petites. When I make an online return at a bricks'n'mortar store, I use that opportunity to browse.

    Bummer - but the shell top looks great.
