Building a Capsule in Navy and White- Questions

I am really interested in building a capsule for Spring/Summer around a few Navy and White pieces with some colorful accents thrown in. I already have a pair of white jeans, a navy polka dot gap shirt, a navy v neck, and a cream and navy striped boatneck. I saw this dress ( I own almost NO dresses) and I really like it although I have not tried it on in the store. I would like opinions on whether this would work for my body type and style and if it will fit into the capsule. What do you think?

    Love the dress, Meredith, and wrap dresses have the advantage of being easy to wear for most body types, particularly since you pretty much tie-to-fit. The only issue might be the versatility of the color. Navy varies a lot in shade -- some are close to black, some are more toward the purple, etc. If the return policy is good, I'd say get it and try it out with your existing wardrobe. I have two wrap dresses, and I love them! It's like wearing jammies.

    Adorable dress and I could completely see it fitting into the capsule, especially if you are adding a colorful topper that you could wear with it. I love wrap dresses too, and I think that BR makes some adorable ones. Darker colors are particularly nice for me, because the darker jersey hides, rather than accentuates, my figure issues. On fit, I'm not sure how tall you are, but I'm 5'5" and short-waisted. BR runs too long for me, so I always have to buy petites or pay to have the waist brought up.

    BTW, this is going to look amazing with your pastel green jean jacket. Just sayin'. ;)

    Love the dress, and I agree that this style tends to suit so many different body types. I also like the idea of building a spring/summer capsule around 2 colours, navy and white would most likely be my first choice too. I have so many navy skirts and pants, and recently started to fret about this: wondering whether I ought to branch out with some brighter or patterned items....Still, navy and white always feels so fresh, sharp and smart, I also love the idea of adding bold accents (mustard, red, etc).

    I love navy and white! I actually substitute dark denim for the navy a lot of the time. I love the way bright colors look with navy and white prints, too. This looks like a nice, low contrast stripe. Wrap dresses suit many figures and you'll never know until you try one on. :)

    I really like that dress and think it would fit in very well.

    Plus you have your new white blouse. Do you have any camis? Maybe in a contrasting color? You might want one to layer under the dress which would certainly work in a navy capsule.

    Love the color and vibe here! Wrap dresses are often too low cut on me, but if the V isn't too deep or you can wear a white cami under, I think it's a great classic style. Do you have white and colored shoes accessories to pair with it?

    It's definitely worth trying Meredith - I could see this working really well for you and wrap dresses tend to work well with most body types. If I remember correctly, you have a white denim jacket? If so, that and your green denim jacket would both make lovely toppers for this dress. The Boutique 9 peep toe booties would make a lovely neutral shoe to go with it. Your yellow cardi would look great too. I think there's a lot of possibilities here.

    I love the idea of a navy and white capsule, just about any other color could work for an accent, too. The wrap dress seems like it would be very flattering, my only hesitation would be the horizontal stripes, I tend to avoid them as they make me look even broader than I am, but that might not be an issue for you. I'm extremely broad shouldered and being a little busty doesn't help the matter. It would make an excellent building block for your capsule!

    Meredith I would give this is try. Wrap dresses do seem to be universally flattering. I love the color combo here and you could have fun with some pattern mixing too
    You could add a white button down underneath, or layer different colored camis. A navy jacket could work over it...try it :)

    That is a perfect addition to your planned wardrobe..and I can so see it with ALL of your lovely jean jackets....both colored and jean! You will totally rock that dress....BUY!

    Thanks for the thumbs up ladies! I am going to order it and see if I like it on me. At least there is a BR store at my local mall and I can return it there if necessary.

    Can't wait to see you in it, Meredith! I think the horizontal stripes will be a positive for you. I have had my eye on this dress, too, but won't buy it simply because...well...because I don't wear dresses often enough to justify it. And I just bought another dress.

    @Suz,
    I have almost NO dresses and really feel that I need one that can work all year round. Hopefully this is not a purchase that is for my "fantasy" or "shadow" life.

    I can see you very well in this dress and also as a several season dress. I think it would be a great start for a dress newbie

    Great dress! Would you wear this in the summer given the 3/4 sleeves?

  • Meredith1953 replied 12 years ago

    @CocoLion,
    Yes except for the very hottest days when the temp can be high 90s!
